Our Story

It all started in 1950 by late Mr Khedarnath Sonah under name 'Mayflower' as Rum Compounder. In 1954, the company started a new business operation in the field of 'Timber Merchant', i.e. to import and supply local market with all kinds of Sawn Timber, species like Seraya, Keruing, Gurjun etc.

In 1964, his son Mr Vasant Sonah, joined him to run this family business, who with his new vision and concept made a radical change to the company and started an additional new line in Steel and Hardware Items.

Later on, in 1970, Mr Vasant Sonah introduced a new business venture and concept in Mauritius, by adding another line in Sanitarywares, Tiles, Bathroom accessories, Fittings and so on.

Mr Vasant Sonah decided to start his own business in 1980, under the name of Mayflower Industries Ltd, whereby the Timber Business was diversified with similar by-products, such as Sawmilling, Timber Processing and so on.

His wife, Mrs Ootra Devi Sonah, joined him later on. She was the first Mauritian lady running a Timber Business. With her new vision and concept, and intelligence and co-guidance, this business was largely diversified.

Later on, the activities of Mayflower Industries Ltd changed to Property Development. The Timber Business till today is still very active under the name of Fine Lumber Co Ltd, run by the new and third generation.

In November 1991, the first unique showroom, an area of over 10,000 sq metre, for furniture was opened under the name of Mayflower Centre Ltd, specialised in manufacturing, assembly, import all kinds of furniture such as Bedroom, Dining, Living Room Sofas, Garden, Office and other occasional items.

Later on, or subsidiary company, Travida Ltd, specialised in Inner and Outer Decorations, Artificial Plants and Flowers, Fountains, Budhas and similar figures, and all kinds of Pottery with unique designs and collections, was founded by, Mrs Ootra Devi Sonah, the Managing Director and the owner of the company.
